CHRISTUS Health is proud to announce the distribution of nearly $300,000 to five area non-profit organizations within the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System ministry. The funds are part of a $3.3 million distribution to 47 non-profit organizations across Texas, Louisiana, and New Mexico through the CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund.

Selected organizations were awarded the funds for programs addressing critical social determinants of health in the communities they serve. Priority issues include chronic disease management, mental health and well-being, safe housing, and food insecurity. The recipient organizations are:

  • Asbury House Child Enrichment Center in Longview
  • Buckner Children and Family Services in Longview
  • Newgate Mission in Longview
  • Twelve Way Foundation in Marshall
  • Women’s Center of East Texas in Longview

“We saw a need for support within local CHRISTUS communities and knew we had to create more ways to contribute and collaborate with local organizations beyond community benefit dollars,” said Jessica Guerra, CHRISTUS Health program manager for community development. “This fund allows us to invest in the programs helping to improve our communities.”

The CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund launched in 2011 and is a CHRISTUS Health initiative supporting programs led by local organizations responding to the needs of the community and improving its health and well-being.

Since inception, CHRISTUS Health has invested more than $22 million in the communities it serves.

Mission Marshall, a 2022 CHRISTUS Fund recipient, used the funds to develop a remote order ahead program, a private and easy way to order free groceries online for people in need. They can sign up and order from a smartphone, tablet or computer, and pick up the order when it is convenient, providing a more private and discreet experience for seeking food assistance.

The remote order ahead program eventually developed into a remote food locker that was unveiled in June and allows for after-hours and weekend pickup for residents facing food insecurity.

The CHRISTUS Community Impact Fund will open its next applications process on Oct. 1. For more information or to apply, visit: www.christushealth.org/connect/fund
