CHRISTUS Health encourages small changes for big results this New Year

As the new year nears, the CHRISTUS Health and Wellness Center encourages southeast Texas residents to find a balanced approach when it comes to creating resolutions.

Tanya Hansen, a personal trainer for the center at CHRISTUS Southeast Texas – St. Elizabeth, said it is important to start small to achieve significant results.

Losing weight and/or getting active is at the top of most people’s New Year’s resolution list, but when it comes to getting exercise, only about 35% of Americans make it a priority, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“People often get discouraged a few weeks into their weight loss journey because they set unrealistic goals for themselves,” Hansen said. “You don’t have to be in the gym seven days a week for two hours a day to see progress. In fact, that mindset will only lead to burnout, so start slow and build on small habits.”

She encourages practical tips to help people prioritize and manage their New Year’s resolutions effectively:

  1. Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can help avoid unnecessary snacking. Aim to drink water throughout the day to maintain energy levels and support bodily functions.
  2. Start by just driving to the gym: If the thought of a full workout feels overwhelming, begin by simply driving to the gym. Even if you don’t get out of the car, this small step can help establish a routine and make the idea of working out less of a chore.
  3. Enjoy things in moderation: Instead of completely depriving yourself of treats, practice moderation. For example, try eating half a cookie instead of denying yourself entirely. This approach can help maintain a healthy relationship with food while still enjoying your favorite snacks.
  4. Set small goals: Avoid overwhelming yourself by setting achievable, small goals. This strategy can prevent discouragement and help you stay motivated. Celebrate each small victory along the way to build confidence and momentum.

“We believe by focusing on manageable changes, individuals can create lasting habits and lead to improved health and well-being,” Hansen said. “The journey to better health doesn’t have to be a sprint; it can be a steady, enjoyable walk toward a healthier lifestyle.”
