Meet Elumalai Appachi, MD

I joined Baylor College of Medicine to support the vision of building a top-tier freestanding children's hospital in San Antonio. My focus has been on creating systems that support high-quality clinical care and expand CHRISTUS Children's clinical enterprise. My approach to leadership has been to set high standards and invest in people to adopt and maintain these standards. Due to my fascination with the science of healthcare management, I completed a master's program for medical management in May 2020. While leading a rapidly growing pediatric critical care unit, I was asked to assume the role of Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. I strive to support the faculty in their clinical work, advance the education and research enterprises while balancing these sometimes-competing academic mandates. On a personal level, I have continued to provide critical care as well as remain involved in clinical research and quality initiatives that advance the care provided to children in San Antonio. I plan to continue leading efforts to build upon our hospital's reputation as the first academic, freestanding children's hospital in America's seventh largest city. Special interests include cardiac critical care, endocrine and metabolic diseases Hobbies include walking, cooking and Carnatic music Languages spoken: English and Tamil
