Medical Students

Our agreement with the University of North Texas Health Science Center-Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC-TCOM) to be a remote educational site for six of its third-year medical students. Good Shepherd hosted this inaugural group of upper-level medical students for the entire academic year, and coordinated core rotations for the students with local physicians in the following specialties: internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, osteopathic manipulative medicine, family practice and psychiatry, as well as some electives, including neurosurgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, gastroenterology, emergency medicine, perinatology and pathology.

The inclusion of these medical students with the residency program will not only allow us to be a multi-faceted teaching institution, but it will allow the incoming residents to provide leadership to the medical students, as well as promote the UT/GSHS Internal Medicine Residency Program to the student body at UNTHSC-TCOM, a state and national leader in education of osteopathic physicians.

Named as one of the nation’s top 50 medical schools for primary care by U.S. News and World Report and the only osteopathic medical school in the state, TCOM is a leader in training physicians skilled in comprehensive primary care and rural medicine. Approximately 65 percent of its graduates practice primary care medicine helping reduce the shortage of physicians in our Texas communities.

If you are a third- or fourth-year medical student at any United States medical school, and are interested in doing a core or elective rotation at CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Medical Center Longview, please contact the graduate medical education office.

We will need documentation from you and your medical school, such as proof of vaccinations and proof of malpractice insurance. While we may not be able to fill all requests, we will certainly try to do our best. Our main goal is to grow the residency program, so if you feel like internal medicine will be the route you choose, we would welcome you to learn about the hospital, the city of Longview and surrounding areas, and witness the quality of care that is synonymous with our providers and our award-winning institution.
