Areas of Volunteer Opportunities
Accounting/Business Office
The Accounting Department performs all the accounting work for the hospital. Volunteers assist staff by inputting data, processing invoices and assisting with general accounting tasks. If you have an aptitude for numbers, this would be an ideal job you.
Acute Rehab
Volunteers assist with phone duty and other administrative tasks as needed by the staff. They visit and play games with patients, serve juices, coffee, and other activities that make the patient’s stay a more positive experience.
Admitting
The admitting department is an extremely busy area within the hospital. This department can always use help with general office work, and those who can give a friendly smile and warm greeting to patients and families.
Building and Grounds
Building and grounds volunteers assist the Maintenance staff with equipment and building maintenance throughout the hospital. If you have any special skills or interests, please let us know.
Bilingual Services
Volunteers assist the staff with clerical duties and help patients by translating their needs and concerns into English. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially needed.
Bookcart
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Patients in the hospital often times feel very isolated and alone; volunteers can help play a very important role in alleviating these feelings by a simple smile or offering something to read. The volunteer bookcart is stocked with donated books and magazines. Follows delivery routes to waiting areas and appropriate patient areas distributing reading material. Sometimes VHS videos for pediatric patients are available as well.
Chaplain
There are approximately 20 multi-denominational chaplains present in the hospital throughout the year, visiting patients, counseling grieving families, and delivering spiritual comfort. Volunteer chaplains are trained in general pastoral care. Chaplain coordinators conduct orientations, training, and request a serious commitment from their volunteers.
Emergency Room
morning, afternoon or early evening
Four-hour shifts are available on weekdays and weekends. Work in the ER can be demanding and rewarding at the same time. Emergency Department volunteers relieve regular staff from numerous tasks and act as patient advocates, comforting patients, explaining registration and hospital procedures, and escorting people as needed to other departments in the hospital. Volunteers contribute to an increased efficiency in patient care. Patients receive speedier, higher quality, more complete care with the volunteers' help.
Gift Shop
Monday - Saturday, morning or afternoon
The gift shop at Marshall Regional is operated and managed by volunteers and with the proceeds is able to raise funds for the hospital and provide scholarships for area students entering health–related fields. Volunteers stock shelves, prepare simple flower arrangements, and ring up sales.
Health Clinics
The Health Clinics connected to Marshall Regional are outpatient centers that provide primary care for families within the community. Volunteers assist staff with light reception duties and general office work. Spanish-speaking volunteers are encouraged to apply.
Human Resources
The HR department manages numerous functions for the hospital’s employees and volunteers. Helping in this office includes services such as answering telephones, helping with various clerical duties, making photo I.D. badges, and inflating and delivering balloons for employee birthdays.
ICU
ICU volunteers must have good people skills, and know how to deal with people who are in stressful circumstances. Families react in very different ways as they wait for news of a loved one. Volunteers help control traffic in and out of the ICU wing and ensure that only authorized individuals and family members have access. They inform families when the doctor has given permission for them to see the patient and provide help and comfort in the interim.
Information Desk
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Volunteers are stationed at the lobby information desk at the main entrance of Marshall Regional. Volunteers courteously greet patients, visitors and staff in person or on the telephone, provide specific directions, information and assistance regarding location of services. If physically able, volunteers may assist patients with wheelchair transportation to destinations and deliver flowers, mail and gifts.
Information Technology
Those who have a talent and interest in computer science technology can find an outlet in the I.T. department. Volunteers, based on skill and experience levels, will help I.T. staff maintain various aspects of the hospital’s technology systems.
Escort
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Two volunteers are needed each shift. Specific start/stop times are flexible. These special helpers create a warm and caring environment and provide assistance to patients, families and visitors in the hospital lobby and waiting areas. Escort volunteers greet customers, transport patients being admitted or dismissed from the hospital by wheelchair. Red Rovers run errands throughout the hospital. These volunteers must be in good physical condition, provide excellent customer service and have the ability to learn their way around the hospital.
General Office
Monday - Friday, morning or afternoon
Many opportunities exist in Marshall Regional’s medical and administrative offices for volunteers to assist with general office duties. Volunteering in these areas is a great way to update job skills and acquire on-the-job experience. Volunteers greet customers, answer telephones, assist with special projects, file documents, run errands, use office machines, perform data entry and conduct other computer assignments.
Surgery Waiting
Monday -Friday, morning or afternoon
Four-hour shifts are available on weekdays. This challenging area enables volunteers to provide general assistance and emotional support to patients and their families before, during and immediately following surgeries. Using the surgery schedule, volunteers keep track of patients and their family members and maintain close contact with the OR and recovery room staff. Due to the volume of surgeries and the status of some of our patients, this area can be very busy and hectic at times. Volunteers also provide coffee service for the waiting families.
