Second Annual Green Hat Charity Fun Run/Walk/Crawl Hits the Streets March 16 March 5, 2019

Lake Charles, Louisiana, March 6, 2019 – The streets of Lake Charles will be filled with green during the second annual Green Hat Charity Fun Run/Walk/Crawl during St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The race kicks off at 11 a.m. at CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital at 524 Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive on March 16. The event benefits the Outpatient Physical Rehabilitation Program at CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital and draws participants with food, fun and the chance to make a difference in someone’s life.

“We are thrilled to officially make this event a tradition,” said Kay Barnett, CFRE, CHRISTUS Ochsner Southwestern Louisiana Foundation Executive Director. “Last year, we were blessed with a great turnout for a wonderful event, and it made a real impact for our patients. This year, we are looking to build on that strong foundation and make it bigger and better – so that our impact will continue to grow.”

Decked out in green hats and other Irish attire, participants will gather at the starting line at CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital before running/walking/crawling across downtown Lake Charles as they enjoy Green Drinks and snacks along the way at the following stops:

Start Line at CHRISTUS Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital (524 Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive)

  1. 121 Artisan Bistro (121 Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive)
  2. Plaid Pig/Lake Charles Transit Center (1155 Ryan Street)
  3. Charleston Bistro (900 Ryan Street, w/ transportation provided to #4)
  4. Louisiana Mortgage Associates (2915 Ryan Street)
  5. Flavin Realty (3221 Ryan Street)

At Flavin Realty, participants will chow down at the Black Pot Cook-Off listening to the music of the Backyard Cowboys until 4 p.m. At the Black Pot Cook-Off amateur chefs show off their cooking skills for a chance to take home bragging rights and awards. Teams begin at 8 a.m. and can cook anything they want, as long as it is prepared and served to the judges at 12:45 p.m. in a black pot. The cost is $30 per team to enter the Cook-Off, and spots are limited but still available.

“We received outstanding support from our community partners and sponsors for this year’s event,” acknowledged Barnett. “The Foundation and everyone at the Outpatient Rehab program would love to thank Flavin Realty, KPLC, Cumulus Radio, Sweet Lake Land and Oil Company, LLC, Merchants & Farmers Bank, American Press, Citgo, P.S. Promotions, Champeaux Evans Hotard Architects, Dr. and Mrs. Tim Haman, and Business First Bank for their kindness and encouragement.”

The first Green Hat Charity Fun Run/Walk/Crawl took place last year and supported the purchase of the LiteGait® Partial-Weight-Bearing Gait Therapy Device, which allows patients with an ambulatory dysfunction to walk comfortably in an environment free from falls. Numerous patients benefit from this cutting-edge technology every day, including those who have had strokes, traumatic brain spinal cord injuries as well as those with gait problems from other injuries and surgeries.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and compassion shown by this community for their continued backing of our efforts to provide the very best care to the patients of Southwest Louisiana,” expressed Barnett. “The LiteGait® device is a tremendous step forward in our rehabilitation capabilities and has had an immediate positive impact on the lives of our patients. We are looking forward to this year’s race, as well as the Shamrocks and Champagne Brunch on St. Patrick’s Day at Gray Plantation, because these occasions allow us the opportunity to serve this community by fulfilling our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.”
