Screening Mammograms
A screening mammogram is one of the most effective tools for detecting breast cancer early—before symptoms appear. Your mammogram will be performed by an all-female, certified mammography team, and results will be reviewed by board-certified radiologists to ensure accurate, timely care.
Diagnostic Mammograms
If a screening mammogram detects an area of concern, a diagnostic mammogram provides a more detailed look. Using advanced digital and 3D imaging, this test helps your care team get a clearer, more precise view to guide next steps in your care.
Other Screenings and Diagnostics
- Breast Ultrasound and Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound provide detailed imaging to evaluate areas of concern, especially for women with dense breast tissue.
- Breast MRI offers highly sensitive imaging to detect abnormalities that may not appear on a mammogram or ultrasound.
- Stereotactic Breast Biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses advanced imaging to precisely target and sample abnormal breast tissue.
- Bone Density Screening helps evaluate your risk for osteoporosis, ensuring you receive the right care to protect your bone health.
Your Care Team and Treatment Options
After your diagnosis, you will be contacted by a CHRISTUS breast nurse navigator from the Ross Breast Center to discuss the next recommended steps in your breast cancer journey. Along with scheduling your appointments with the members of your breast care team, your nurse navigator can also provide referrals to local resources and serve as a primary contact and resource throughout your treatment.
A CHRISTUS medical oncologist is your primary partner in cancer care, specializing in treatments like chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapy and targeted therapy. They guide your treatment plan, provide supportive care and may coordinate with other specialists to ensure you receive comprehensive care. You may also have access to clinical research trials through your oncologist, offering new possibilities for treatment.
A CHRISTUS radiation oncologist specializes in using radiation therapy to treat cancer. If breast cancer is part of your diagnosis, radiation therapy may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. It helps target cancer cells and lower the risk of recurrence after surgery, no matter the stage of your cancer.
Surgery may be part of your treatment plan, and you’ll be in the hands of our experienced team of CHRISTUS surgeons. Whether it's a lumpectomy, which removes the tumor along with a small amount of surrounding tissue, or a mastectomy, which involves removing the tumor and one or both breasts, our team will guide you through every step with care and expertise, ensuring you receive the best possible care.
Genetic testing can help guide your breast cancer treatment and identify inherited risks for you and your family. Your CHRISTUS genetics specialist will review your family history, discuss testing options, and explain your results in detail. Testing may also open the door to clinical trials and advanced treatment options. Genetic risk assessment is available for both men and women, as well as their family members.
Prevent and manage lymphedema while supporting your recovery from breast cancer surgery with our specialized CHRISTUS physical therapy team. Meeting with a therapist before surgery allows us to evaluate your strength and movement, making it easier to detect and address any post-surgery concerns early. You’ll also learn exercises to aid your recovery, with continued support after surgery to help with stiffness, mobility, lymphedema management and more.
Our team of CHRISTUS reconstructive and plastic surgeons will walk you through your breast reconstruction options, ensuring you understand what's available to you. While not every patient will need plastic surgery, it's important to explore your options early, as they may influence your treatment decisions. By discussing these options up front, we’ll help you make the choice that’s right for you.
