Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB)
Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VABB): A Minimally Invasive Diagnostic Procedure
A vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) is a minimally invasive procedure used to collect tissue samples from the breast for diagnostic purposes. Guided by imaging technology, VABB offers a precise and efficient way to examine suspicious areas in the breast.
What Is VABB?
VABB is a diagnostic procedure that uses a biopsy needle connected to a vacuum device to remove breast tissue samples. This advanced technique requires only a single needle insertion to collect multiple tissue samples, making it less invasive than traditional biopsy methods.
Why Is VABB Performed?
Your doctor may recommend VABB if a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI shows a suspicious breast abnormality, such as:
- A small mass that cannot be felt during a physical exam
- A cluster of tiny calcium deposits (microcalcifications)
- Areas of abnormal tissue changes or structural distortions
- A new mass or calcium deposits near a previous surgery site
How Does VABB Work?
- Procedure:
- The radiologist uses imaging guidance, such as an ultrasound, to locate the suspicious area.
- A small incision is made to allow for the biopsy needle’s insertion.
- The vacuum device collects tissue samples with a single needle pass, minimizing tissue disruption.
- Duration: The procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes.
- Comfort: Local anesthesia is applied to numb the area, ensuring a painless experience for most patients.
After the Procedure
- Recovery: Patients can resume normal activities immediately but should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 48 hours.
- Results: Tissue samples are sent to pathology for analysis, with results typically available within 48–72 hours. Your health care provider will discuss the findings with you.
Benefits of VABB
- Minimally invasive: requires only a small incision and typically no stitches
- Precise: collects high-quality tissue samples in one needle insertion
- Quick recovery: most patients return to normal activities the same day
- Versatile: effective for diagnosing small lesions or complex tissue abnormalities
Limitations and Considerations
VABB may not be suitable for all patients, including those who:
- Are taking anticoagulant medications or have bleeding disorders
- Have lesions located in the skin or immediately adjacent to breast implants
