90 Years of Care for East Texas

Northeast Texas: Serving Longview, Marshall, and surrounding areas.

From a humble beginning in 1935 as the 47-bed Gregg Memorial Hospital, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System has grown into a system of regional medical centers, primary and immediate care facilities and health and wellness centers, leading the region in orthopedic sports medicine, heart and vascular care and more.

As Gregg County’s largest employer, we have cared for our community for more than 180 years combined. A proud heritage of innovation, dedication and continuing community support has propelled Good Shepherd Health System to the forefront of health care delivery in East Texas.

To Our Community...

Headshot of Todd Hancock, Chief Executive Officer of CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System

As we reflect on the past year and our 90-year history, I am grateful for the incredible work being done in our community. At CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System, our commitment to improving health outcomes, providing compassionate care and meeting the unique needs of our neighbors has never been stronger.

Our mission — to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ — guides everything we do, and it’s an honor to share the positive impact made with your partnership. From providing charity care for those who cannot afford treatment to offering health education and preventive services to the underserved, we strive to make health care accessible, equitable and effective for all.

In fiscal year 2024, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System provided over $35.5 million in charity care, covering the full costs for individuals without insurance up to 300% of the poverty level and offering prorated assistance for those up to 400%. We also invested over $3.8 million in community benefits addressing priorities like heart disease, diabetes, obesity, primary care access, behavioral health and food insecurity. Our providers offer health education in Longview, Marshall and surrounding counties. In FY24, we utilized more than $300,000 in CHRISTUS Health system grants to support local partners working on food insecurity, addiction recovery, single-parent family stability and bilingual preschool programs. Additionally, our athletic trainers provide free services to 28 schools, and a Community Health Worker helps discharged patients facing food insecurity find local resources.

As we continue to grow, we are excited to announce the expanded service lines to include a comprehensive cardiovascular program and a new cancer center. This will allow us to provide specialized care for those in our community facing these critical health challenges. Our state-of-the-art cancer center will address the region’s growing need for full-service care, enhancing patient experiences and strengthening community health. This growth will also help attract new physicians to the area, expanding the range and availability of expertise available to our neighbors.

This year, we’ve seen firsthand the power of community collaboration. Whether it’s our health outreach programs, partnerships with local organizations or generous support from volunteers and donors, together we’ve created a healthier, more resilient community. Every step is inspired by our shared values of compassion, respect and stewardship, and it’s because of your support that we can continue our mission.

I am excited about the future and how we’ll continue to address the evolving needs of our community. We remain dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or financial circumstances, has access to the care and resources they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

Thank you for your partnership, trust and belief in our shared vision. Together, we will continue to build a healthier future for all.

Blessings,
Todd Hancock, Chief Executive Officer

Celebrating 90 Years of Good Health

A retro image of Gregg Hospital, which later became CHRISTUS Health Good Shepherd Hospital

CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System is proud to celebrate its 90th anniversary on March 27, 2025 with proclamations from the city of Longview and Gregg County. Originally Gregg Memorial Hospital, the facility opened in 1935 to support the growing community during the East Texas oil boom.

Now the largest employer in the county with more than 3,000 Associates, CHRISTUS Good Shepherd has grown to include three inpatient facilities, 577 beds, five emergency care centers, 12 outpatient centers and 40 clinics.

“We are so proud of the heritage and the historical significance our hospital and health system have played over the last 90 years,” said Todd Hancock, president and chief executive officer of CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System. “We are proud to be a pillar in Longview, Marshall and communities across East Texas.”

In 1960, Gregg Memorial Hospital was renamed Good Shepherd Hospital. Ten years later, the original building was replaced with a four-story, 276-bed facility. In 1981, “Health System” was added to its name and patient capacity increased to 335. The first major expansion occurred in 2007 when Marshall Regional Medical Center joined the health system, improving access and quality of care in the region.

CHRISTUS Health acquired Good Shepherd in 2017 and has invested more than $400 million in the region. Highlights include the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Hospital - NorthPark in Longview, home to the CHRISTUS Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. It also includes the CHRISTUS Emergency Center and CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic family medicine clinic.

Upcoming expansions at CHRISTUS Good Shepherd will further improve access to care. A standalone emergency center in Henderson will open in the summer of 2025, and work began on the new CHRISTUS Cancer Center – Longview in January. The $36 million facility will address the region’s growing need for full-service cancer care.

CHRISTUS Good Shepherd remains committed to investing in Longview, Marshall and the surrounding communities. “We see ourselves as more than just a hospital or a health care facility,” Hancock said. “We see ourselves as a community leader. It is a role we embrace and are proud of. The future is bright for CHRISTUS Good Shepherd and for the communities we serve.”
