Medical Student Rotations

The emergency departments at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospitals in Corpus Christi include busy regional trauma, stroke and cardiac centers with a wide mix of patient presentations. Students have the opportunity to evaluate and treat acutely ill patients as they present to the ED and follow them through their emergency department stay.

SLOEs available upon request for all rotations except Surgical Trauma Critical Care Sub-Internship.

We offer several four-week Emergency Medicine rotations to medical students. In addition to direct patient care, students participate in simulation laboratories and weekly residency conferences. They enhance their medical knowledge through student-oriented reading assignments, procedure labs, and case conferences. Students have the opportunity to ride with the Corpus Christi Fire Department EMS.

Medical students benefit from a rich clinical patient experience at CHRISTUS Spohn. We encourage students to assume responsibility for the patient care they provide and feel valued as members of the healthcare team. The faculty and resident physicians are dedicated and enthusiastic teachers. Our patient population, combined with numerous procedural and learning opportunities, make our program a great medical student experience. Over half of each residency class consists of physicians who chose to rotate with us as medical students.

Electives

This elective is located in Corpus Christi Texas at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospitals. Rotating Medical Students will be introduced to core Emergency Medicine US modalities: eFAST, ECHO, Thoracic, Biliary, Renal, DVT, early OB, and US guided/assisted procedures. They will receive lectures on general ultrasound physics and image acquisition, optimization, and interpretation. Hands on experience with both EM Residents and US Faculty in ED. Scanning shifts with US Director. Sim-Center for procedure practice. Dedicated Didactics with texts and study materials provided. Up to six 9hr ED shifts with opportunity for SLOE.

This elective is located in Corpus Christi Texas at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospitals.

Course objectives:

  • Assess and respond to emergency situations in a variety of settings
  • Implement the ‘ABCs’ of resuscitation
  • Understand the epidemiology and pathophysiology of common illnesses and injuries occurring in the wilderness environment
  • Manage common illnesses and injuries in an austere environment with limited resources
  • Identify and plan for special hazards in a variety of extreme environments
  • Demonstrate basic competence in exotic travel and wilderness survival skills
  • Provide medical advice in backcountry or other remote settings
  • Understand the physician's role in search and rescue

These objectives will be achieved through:

  • Real-world presentations and discussions

The Simulation Medicine rotation will provide 4th year medical students with an introductory level understanding of clinical simulation education in the areas of technical operations, simulation instructional design and theory, simulation center administration, and simulation educator professional development while still having the opportunity to spend clinical time in the emergency department. Students in this rotation will have the chance learn basic essential elements of clinical simulation training in the new state-of-the-art CHRISTUS Spohn Clinical Simulation Education Center located at the CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline campus in Corpus Christi, TX. This campus is a Level 2 Trauma, as well as a cardiac and stroke center serving the entire Spohn region of South Texas with the simulation center serving the training needs of all CHRISTUS Spohn physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals in the region.

Through partnership with our Surgical-Trauma department, we are pleased to offer a surgical trauma ICU sub-I rotation for interested 4th year medical students. Limited availability.

Join us in coastal Corpus Christi, Texas for a 4-week Critical Care rotation in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of our urban hospital that serves as a regional stroke, cardiac and trauma center. You will work alongside our Emergency Medicine residents under the direction of the Intensivist on a dedicated teaching service. This experience will provide you with an excellent introduction to the ICU environment and a chance to build upon your existing medical knowledge. As the only medical student on the service, you will experience a wide variety of patient conditions and become familiar with a number of procedures as part of the critical care team. To achieve your learning objectives, you will attend didactic sessions with the Emergency Medicine residency program and follow a curriculum designed to introduce the foundations of critical care medicine.

This rotation is available to qualified 4th year students and 3rd year medical students who have completed core rotations in medicine, surgery, and family medicine. A preference will be given to medical students pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine.
